This is how Brazil is falling apart, explained better than I could possibly do. Keep in mind that doesn’t touch all the bad shit still occurring on the background, like the record violence ratings, inflation, world cup and olympics expenses that haven’t been caught up on... All of that stuff contributes to the public dissatisfaction, even though it’s not central to the political crisis itself. It also doesn’t cover how much hatred has been bred between the opposing sides.

“Brazil is not for beginners.” Indeed... Indeed.

Also, thanks for reminding me that I haven’t checked in on Vlogbrothers in a while. They do a pretty good job making issues approachable.

It was somewhat educational. There isn’t much media coverage of the goings in Brazil over here. Roussef giving Lula immunity made it, but no in-depth articles explaining what is actually behind it.

I wonder how much of the other stuff has roots in the political corruption. I would venture to guess that a lot of it does, especially the World Cup and Olympics stuff. It seems that everywhere a major international sporting event goes there is rampant corruption leading the way.

Oh, pretty much all of it. Bringing the World Cup and the Olympics to Brazil was a massive effort to show critics of the workers’ party government that the country was now finally in the big leagues, globally relevant and fully developed. Then everything justifiably fell apart, and both events became the punchline to a schadenfreude ridden joke. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the 2016 olympic games were a disaster os epic proportions and violent riots.
